DEFINITION: Very small freshwater shrimp used fresh or dried especially in the cooking of Pará.

COMMENT: Endemic to the Amazon rivers, aviú is abundant especially on the surface of Tapajós and Tocantins after their first floods and has long been used by the local Indians. The most common ways to eat this tiny freshwater shrimp is in regional dishes in the form of omelets, soup, rice and in a typical Pará dish called mojica de aviú.
