ENTRY: guaraná (2)

CLASS: noun

EQUIVALENT: guaraná

DEFINITION: Carbonated soft drink flavored with the Amazonian fruit guarana.

COMMENT: Certainly the most iconic Brazilian soft drink, guaraná is made from a syrup flavored with a fruit with the same name which is then diluted in water and carbonated, becoming the second best-selling carbonated soft drink in the country, following Coca-Cola. The leading guaraná brand is Antarctica, but there are many others available on the market. A popular regional one is the pink guaraná Jesus, from the state of Maranhão. A market leader in the region for many years, guaraná Jesus was purchased by Coca-Cola and can now be found in selected stores in big cities.
