SCIENTIFIC NAME: Platonia insignis
EQUIVALENT: bacuri
DEFINITION: Mango-sized brownish Amazonian fruit with thick rind and fragrant sweet and sour pulp eaten fresh or made into preserves, ice cream and juice.
EXAMPLE: Remove the bacuri pulp scraping it with scissors or a thin knife.

COMMENT: Abundant especially in the state of Pará, bacuri contains notable amounts of phosphorus, iron and vitamin C. The only edible part of the fruit is the sticky pulp which has to be sucked or cut with a sharp knife. This pulp surrounds large brown seeds from which a kind of oil is extracted to be used as medicine.
