EQUIVALENT: squash
DEFINITION: Common name of several thick-skinned cultivars of different colors and shapes with soft and fleshy pulp which is cooked and used for making sweet and savory dishes.
EXAMPLE: To use the squash, cut it in half and remove the seeds with a spoon. Carefully use a vegetable peeler or a sharp knife 10 remove the skin, and cut flesh into 1-in.-square chunks.

COMMENT: Widely appreciated all over the country, pumpkins are peeled and seeded to be cooked and made into sweets, soups, salads and traditional dishes such as quibebe and camarão na moranga. Its sprout, called cambuquira, is also edible.
